First strike in Comair’s history to go ahead

The strike at Comair‚ the British Airways franchisee that operates kulula.com‚ is scheduled to officially start at 4.40pm on Wednesday. According to the United Association of SA (Uasa)‚ a trade union representing about 400 - or 60% - of Comair’s staff‚ picketing and downing of tools will only start Thursday morning.A total of about 700 workers are expected to participate in the industrial action.The strike will be the first in the history of the company in South Africa.Uasa’s operational manager: aerospace Jannem Goussard told TMG Digital that the union had given the company its notice to strike on Monday at 4.40. The company has also notified the unions of a possible lockout of striking workers.According to a statement from Uasa‚ the workers are demanding a 30 % salary increase over a three years at 10% per year‚ on top of the consumer price index increase‚ and the company is offering an equivalent of 22‚5% or 7.5% per year increase for the same period.The work stoppage is expected to cause serious inconveniences and delays in the country’s three biggest international airports - OR Tambo‚ Cape Town and Durban...
