The bail application of #OutsourcingMustFall activist Vusi Mahlangu continues on Friday‚ a day after his name was raised in a political spat between the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and the ruling party.Mahlangu faces charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice for reportedly claiming he was kidnapped and assaulted in Mthatha while on his way to address university workers. He was remanded in custody after his last appearance‚ “in the interest of justice”‚ to give authorities time to verify his residential address and identity number.Investigating officer Captain Nceba Mdebuka said at the time that Mahlangu had provided police with three different dates of births in previous cases against him.The magistrate granted a postponement until Friday.Mahlangu’s name was on Thursday invoked by PAC spokesperson Kenneth Mokgatlhe in his attack on African National Congress secretary-general Gwede Mantashe’s comments earlier this week that it would have been preferable if the PAC was stronger in the political arena than the Democratic Alliance due to its policies.“Things would be better if it was someone from the left who argues with you than the DA‚” Gwede had said.Mokgatlhe countered by saying that his party had no ambitions of being the official opposition‚ and “the visibility and strength of the PAC cannot be measured and reduced to a mere membership but the influence exerted on the ground”.He said its student wing‚ the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania‚ “is leading the student struggle which includes movements such as #RhodesMustFall and #OutsourcingMustFall”‚ and highlighted that “Mahlangu is a former leader of Pasma”.Mahlangu’s lawyer Bayethe Maswazi is on Friday likely to oppose any further delays in the bail application‚ as at his client’s last appearance he claimed: “This postponement is a malicious attempt by the state to detain the accused. It is an orchestrated and a calculated attack by the state to secure a postponement by hook or crook.” – TMG Digital/Dispatchlive..
