Planned Gupta compound protest is blocked by court

Activist-driven campaign groups Right2Know (R2K) and Break Free South Africa have failed in their bid to protest outside the Gupta house in Johannesburg on Saturday.The South Gauteng High Court on Friday dismissed Break Free SA’s application to hold a protest at the Gupta’s Saxonwold compound. R2K had joined Break Free SA in the application.Bongani Xezwi‚ R2K’s National Outreach Organiser‚ says both groups will be appealing the court’s decision.“We are speaking to our lawyers about the possibility of appealing. We want to know what the reasons are for the dismissal of our application.”Xezwi both groups will still gather on Saturday at Zoo Lake to inform their members about the court’s decision.“We are going to inform people about the purpose of the march. We want to break free from the Guptas.“The protest aims to highlight the link between corporations who profit from the coal industry and the devastating impact that climate change has on the lives of millions of people in South Africa‚” Xezwi says.Break Free South Africa comprises civil society organisations‚ coal mining impacted communities‚ farmers and NGOs‚ who have all united to speak out and protest against the climate crises and corruption in the coal mining sector...
