Talk of arresting Gordhan another blow to reeling SA

16 May 2016 - 09:17 By The Times Editorial

The case against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and former executives at SARS is a tangled political web that gets ever more convoluted.Yesterday we woke to the shocking Sunday Times revelation that the cabinet had been briefed about the imminent arrest of Gordhan and of members of the "rogue" unit at SARS formed while he was leading the service. This not only rocks the political ship of state but has a direct effect on our economy and how the outside world sees us as an investment destination. We demand that our security agencies investigate the allegations without fear or favour .We dare to ask the Minister of Police to tell the nation whether Gordhan is a suspect, if so of exactly what offence, and challenge him and President Jacob Zuma to clear the air.We cannot spend sleepless nights wondering whether our Finance Minister will be behind bars in the morning - and worrying about the fate of our investments if he is arrested. Now that Zuma has dismissed claims that he is considering yet another cabinet reshuffle, he should reassure ordinary people and investors alike that politics has nothing to do with the talk of arresting Gordhan. But would anyone believe him?If Gordhan has to answer to criminal allegations, it should be done openly and not behind the scenes. It would be helpful if the police followed the rules and allowed the National Prosecuting Authority to pronounce on whether the case against Gordhan, if it exists, would hold water. All this is happening in the week in which we all breathed a sigh of relief after ratings agency Moody's decided not to junk our economy.Talk of scoring own-goals.Sound leadership should prevail. We ask Zuma: What agenda is being pushed in this sordid affair?..
