Another taxi driver was shot and killed near Mthatha on Tuesday night in what police suspect could be a hit linked to ongoing violence between rival taxi associations. Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the victim‚ believed to be around 44 years of age‚ was shot near Gxulu village between Mthatha and Libode around 9pm."He was shot inside the taxi so we think it could be someone who was masquerading as a passenger‚" he said."The victim died from a gunshot wound in his upper body."Fatyela was unable to say which taxi association the victim belonged to but revealed that the police had roped in the Hawks‚ the country's elite crime-fighting unit‚ to try and quell taxi violence.Tuesday night's incident was the third taxi shooting incident near Mthatha in less than a month.Late last month‚ a 25-year-old taxi conductor was shot and killed in broad daylight‚ while during the same week 35-year-old Simo Tshangela died in a hail of bullets as he was about to enter Libode where he was ferrying passengers from Mthatha.In total‚ about five people are believed to have been killed in taxi wars in recent months. – TMG Digital/BDlive ..
