Cellphone and online banking outage this weekend

“Routine system maintenance” will prevent customers from a range of banking activities and transactions from 2am on Sunday morning‚ Standard Bank said on Thursday.The bank said in a statement: “Standard Bank wishes to advise customers of routine system maintenance due to take place on Sunday‚ 12 June 2016. This will affect the ability of customers to perform certain banking activities and transactions from 2am Sunday morning until 12am Monday morning.”Affected services: • ATM deposits will be unavailable. • Standard Bank’s banking app‚ business online‚ internet‚ telephone and cellphone banking services will be unavailable. • There will be limited services at Standard Bank branches‚ Customer Contact Centres and the AlwaysOn Banking channel via WeChat.“While Standard Bank recognises the impact of service disruptions on customers‚ the downtime is necessary to make the system changes‚” the bank said.“To limit the impact on banking activities‚ Standard Bank encourages customers to plan ahead.”“Although customers will still be able to swipe their debit‚ cheque or credit cards to make in-store purchases‚ it is worthwhile to consider having cash on hand‚" it added.While the “routine maintenance” alert made no mention of this‚ Standard Bank was robbed of R300 million in a three-hour attack in which fake credit cards were used to draw cash in 14‚000 transactions at 1‚400 ATMS across Japan late last month. Business Day reported the withdrawals were mainly at convenience store ATMs that would take the relatively unsophisticated fake cards‚ which were cloned from Standard Bank customer information...
