Kimberley police lauded a “constable for his vigilance and…the community for their assistance” in the arrest of a 29-year-old cellphone robber.

The incident occurred just before noon on Monday at the Kim Park Shopping Centre in the Kimberley CBD‚ when a 50-year-old woman was exiting a butchery.

“The suspect forcefully grabbed her cellphone from her hand‚” a police statement said.

“Her scream for help alerted some men and women in the vicinity. The community members chased the suspect down Sidney Street into the direction of Constable Merapelo Pilane – a member of Provincial Corporate Communication - who immediately acted and arrested the suspect.”

“The cellphone was also retrieved from the suspect and given back to the right-full owner.”
