Two officers with the Mangaung Detective Services were to appear in court on Wednesday after being arrested for allegedly a R100 000 bribe to “destroy” a case.

A Hawks statement said the pair – a warrant officer and a sergeant – “were investigating a case of theft of a tractor and instead of doing their duties by the book they approached the suspect and demanded R100 000”.

“The suspect gave in to their demands and gave the officers R30 000‚ with a promise to settle the balance at a later date.”

Their arrest on Tuesday came after Hawk’s Anti-Corruption Unit members “got the information that the two officers were on their way to Hertzogville to collect the bribe money”.

“The police officers‚ who allegedly had used a state vehicle illegally for their shenanigans‚ were arrested at a bank‚ with R70 000 cash in their possession.”

They have been charged with corruption and soliciting a bribe‚ and were to appear in the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court.
