Bok flops' last chance

17 June 2016 - 09:56 By LIAM DEL CARME

The miscreants from the Springboks' defeat at Newlands will get a second and last chance when they play Ireland tomorrow. The Test at Ellis Park is the second of the three-match series that started in Cape Town last week and culminates in Port Elizabeth next weekend.Bok coach Allister Coetzee made just two forced changes to his squad but warned of the consequences should his players not respond positively following last week's shock defeat."This is an opportunity to redeem themselves. They know now there will be consequences if they don't take this opportunity. It will hurt them financially or it could cost them their position in the team."Under-performers could feel the dreaded axe but those who survive could feel the pinch because of the fines system in place."A player could lose something like R25000 if he steps out of line on the field, or gets carded," a team spokesman said. For tomorrow's clash, however, Coetzee is sticking to his guns. A raft of changes would have sent out the wrong message."I believe in second chances. They need to show improvement. If they don't I have to look at other players."They need to put in a performance that is aligned with their capability. Look at basics."He may espouse the virtues of second chances but Coetzee is no romantic. He will have no lingering attachment to his first-choice players should they betray his confidence again. The team changes were foisted upon Coetzee. Flyhalf Elton Jantjies comes in for Pat Lambie (concussed) and lock Pieter-Steph du Toit for Lood de Jager (calf-muscle tear)...
