Fraudster spills the beans in court

The state's case against a syndicate accused of swindling millions from the SA Social Security Agency was bolstered after a fraudster decided to spill the beans. Nosipho Majola was handed a six-year jail sentence in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.The Cape Town woman is among 14 people from across the country who were arrested by the Hawks last month. Eight of them worked in Sassa's grant administration department.Majola pleaded guilty and her sentence was suspended for five years in exchange for her testimony against her co-accused."She offered an undercover agent R12,500 to fraudulently register identity documents and arrange for Sassa bank cards," said NPA spokesman Eric Ntabazalila.The syndicate is accused of defrauding Sassa of more than R2.3-million through 400 social grants.Prosecutor Simon Leope, who secured Majola's plea, lamented corruption committed by state officials." Corruption by members of the public in cahoots with persons in positions of trust has reached alarming proportions," he said...
