Cuba doctors coming to work in Gauteng clinics

Twenty-five Cuban doctors will on Friday land on South African soil to serve Gauteng's public clinics. Gauteng MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu announced this on Thursday at the launch of a paediatric surgery outpatient clinic at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto.The MEC said one of her department's priorities is bringing more doctors into the public sector.Gauteng health department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the doctors were primary healthcare specialists recruited to work in under-staffed clinics where there are no doctors.This will remove some of strain on hospitals‚ where people prefer to go for treatment because there are doctors‚ he said.Mahlangu said there are currently 400 South African medical students are being trained in Cuba in an initiative to strengthen public healthcare."We need to train more doctors ... What doctors do in the private sector‚ they must do in the public sector."The new two-story clinic at Bara will cater for children up to the age of ten. It will be able to treat 2‚000 outpatients and 300 inpatients monthly.The department hopes construction will be completed next year...
