Rainbow Nation dream turning into a racism nightmare

30 June 2016 - 10:25 By The Times Editorial

Stupidity knows no boundaries. It is found in almost all societies and communities. What matters is how we react to that stupidity. There is no place in this country for white supremacists. For too long we have tolerated racist insults. We have kept quiet.Even after we have attained democracy and drafted a progressive constitution, there are those in our society who still believe that they stand upon the highest podium of human intelligence and that God gave them the right to rule over others. This week, racism has again fallen under the spotlight, with Sodwana Bay Guest House owner Andre Slade and his partner Katerina Krizani using the Bible to justify their hatred. To their minds, God decreed the whites superior to blacks. While we have reason to demand that action be taken to stamp out race hatred, perhaps it is a good thing that more and more racists are coming out of the closet. This way, the racism is visible and we can confront it .The idea of a so-called Rainbow Nation was a sweet dream that has become a nightmare.Black people are still insulted, still looked down upon, and no matter what concessions they have made to white society, they are still deemed inferior. Our freedom should never be conditional.American actor and social activist Jesse Williams this week stated, bluntly and correctly, "the burden of the brutalised is not to comfort the bystander".We should act decisively against those who are racist and continue to justify their actions. The sad reality is that after a long struggle that claimed the lives of many, the demon of racism continues to haunt this nation to this day like a shadow in the night. It is stupid to think that racists will transform on their own.Where there are vested privileges, racism thrives...
