Jane has never been the main event in any Tarzan story. But in 2016 this approach wouldn't work.In the new 3D film The Legend of Tarzan - directed by David Yates, and starring Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan and Margot Robbie as Jane - Jane isn't just Tarzan's wife, she's a person in her own right and just as adept at jungle survival."There was no way I was going to play the damsel in distress," Robbie told Vogue. The film, which was released in UK cinemas yesterday, picks up the story eight years after the duo's original adventures. Tarzan is now married to Jane Porter and living in England as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke. He is persuaded to return to the Congo by an African-American politician, played by Samuel L Jackson, to investigate rumours of abuses under the colonial rule of King Leopold II of Belgium. Jane insists on accompanying her husband on the journey. This punchy, independent Jane possesses jungle skills that include out-swimming advancing hippos.Director David Yates said Robbie was the perfect fit because she "has an unpretentiousness, a real pragmatism".He said: "Those qualities were very important for Jane - someone who's open to experience the beauty of the world." ..
