Three suspected hijackers on their “death bed” after being shot by police “will appear before the Randburg Magistrates Court soon”. A statement issued by the Hawks said its “Technical Operation Management Section (TOMS) members have shot and critically wounded three runaway suspects in Krugersdorp on Thursday morning”.A search of the suspects’ vehicle – which “had been reported hijacked in Mpumalanga and had a police registration number belonging to the Local Criminal Record Centre” – uncovered two sets of police handcuffs and police blue lights‚ as well as two unlicensed firearms. The Hawks statement – headlined “TRIO ON DEATH BED AFTER A SHOOT OUT WITH POLICE” – said: “TOMS members received information about the hijacked Toyota double-cab with four occupants who were on their way to commit an armed robbery in Gauteng province.”It said that they tailed the “suspicious vehicle on N14 towards Krugersdorp” and had tried to intercept it at an off-ramp to a petrol station on the route. The suspects‚ however‚ “started shooting at the police and left the garage at high speed”‚ and‚ after a chase‚ they “lost control of their vehicle and hit a ditch”.“The suspects tried to flee on foot‚ still shooting at the police but the men of law returned fire‚ critically wounding all suspects‚” it said. However‚ EMER-G-MED‚ whose paramedics were first on scene‚ said one of the suspects had shot in the chest and required rapid advanced life support intervention‚ while another “was shot in the leg‚ and the third sustained a bullet graze which didn't require hospital care”.When contacted for clarity‚ Hawks spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said the information she received from “officers on the scene was that the suspects were critically injured”.Her media statement said they are “in hospital under police guard”.“The trio‚ aged 28‚ 31 and 34 will appear before the Randburg Magistrates Court soon for attempted murder‚ possession of police equipment‚ unlicensed firearms‚ and hijacking.”EMER-G-MED had on Thursday said the SAPS “did a impeccable job and managed to arrest all of the suspected hijackers”.The highway in the vicinity of the shooting had to be closed to traffic‚ causing massive congestion‚ while police officers conducted investigations on the scene. ..
