Twisted tale of facing up to unfaceable

This is the story of King Oedipus found in Greek mythology and is the basis for the controversial new local drama Isikizi, which debuts tonight on the Mzansi Magic channel.Starring Tina Jaxa, Phila Madlingozi, Timmy Kwebulana and Zandile Msutwana, the series takes an unapologetic approach to the more taboo aspects of society.Producer Roberta Durrant says Isikizi - which means disgrace - explores themes of greed, betrayal and incest, all relevant topics in today's world."It shows complex human relationships."In this day and age, the possibility of someone meeting their mother later on in life and establishing a romantic relationship with her is not that far-fetched," Durrant said.Jaxa agreed."These are things that happen every day behind closed doors."The difference is in this story the gender roles are switched. It's now a mother and a son engaged in incest instead of a father and a daughter - as we are more used to hearing about and seeing in our society."Director Mandilakhe Yengo said Isikizi seeks to highlight the tension between one's destiny and the idea of having control over one's life.Isikizi is on Mzansi Magic, (DStv channel 161) on Mondays at 8pm...
