Massmart distances itself from work seekers outside its stores

Massmart has distanced itself from informal job seekers who wait outside its stores and offer their services to contractors and do-it-yourself homeowners.This comes after Christopher Marais was attacked, allegedly by a job seeker whom he had previously employed, who claimed that the contractor owed him wages from a job he had done.Annaleigh Vallie‚ the group communication manager for Massmart‚ said the company could not control or vet who hung around outside its stores on public roads.“It should be noted that there is no legal restriction that prevents work seekers from pursuing employment opportunities in this way‚” Vallie said.Vallie said attempts to mediate the relationship between contractors‚ private homeowners and informal job seekers had failed in the past but Massmart was taking suggestions. “We are open to investing in constructive ideas that will facilitate a responsible outcome that accommodates the needs of contractors and private homeowners without compromising the rights of residents and informal work seekers‚” said Vallie.Meanwhile, police have swooped on loiterers outside the Builders Warehouse in Lonehill where Marais was attacked earlier this month.Several suspects have been arrested over the past two days in what Warrant Officer Balan Muthan‚ head of communication for the Douglasdale Police Station‚ said was an ongoing operation...
