Education in Vuwani goes ahead despite torching of another school: Education Dept

The department of education in Limpopo insisted on Wednesday that learning and teaching will go ahead in Vuwani despite the burning of another school. Department spokesman Dr Naledzani Rasila says the latest incident had not disrupted schooling as pupils whose classrooms had been gutted have been "squeezed" into other classes.Arsonists set Mugoidwa Secondary School on fire on Tuesday night as schools were preparing to re-open after three months of violent protests which disrupted classes."It is disappointing‚ especially after we signed an agreement with stakeholders‚ including the community‚ that education should not be disrupted‚" Rasila said."But we going ahead with lessons. Learners whose classrooms were burnt have been squeezed into classrooms in a block that has not been affected."He said the department relied on local residents to guard schools. "We ask the community to look after the schools. These schools belong to them‚" he said.The SA Human Rights Commission held hearings last month on the right of pupils in Vuwani to access education.
