The South African Students Congress (Sasco) has warned the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to reinstate 17 suspended students or they will shut down its campuses. This was said by Sasco president Thabo Moloja at a press briefing held at ANC headquarters in Johannesburg on Thursday. He said they were "perplexed that student activists have been abused‚ harassed‚ and intimidated for refusing to discuss fees at university councils and wanting to insource bouncers on campuses and find themselves suspended for burning university properties". The university suspended the students on August 5 for their alleged involvement in the burning of an auditorium in May."In light of the extremely serious nature of the incident‚ the university does not consider it appropriate to delay the disciplinary proceedings pending conclusion of criminal proceedings‚ which may only commence sometime in the future‚" the university said at the time.Moloja‚ however‚ said the university should not have suspended the students before any criminal charges were laid against them. The student organization also accused the university's vice chancellor and principal‚ Ihron Rensburg‚ of "terrorist" tactics."Sasco is angered by the terrorist actions of Prof. Rensburg‚ who continues to terrorise our students in that university‚" he said."We say to UJ management‚ it will not work‚ not with us. UJ will have to expel all student activists first and no amount of terrorism will work with us. We shall meet on the battlefield and shut UJ down."..
