Police in line for a better deal

Many police officers can't get home loans because of their low pay - but are not poor enough to qualify for an RDP house. Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu intends to resolve this and other disadvantages of police work through the establishment of a ministerial transformation task team, which was launched yesterday."[There's] a lot of things we think we need to get right in the police," said Sotyu.The team will look at police salaries and whether the police are adequately covered by medical aid schemes, in service and in retirement."The police can't be treated just like any other people. [Policing] is a scarce skill. It's not a job like any other job," said Sotyu. ANC chaplain Vukile Mehana is chairman of the team, which has until 2019 to finalise its job.The formation of the team is in line with the National Development Plan's "vision of professionalising and demilitarising" the police by 2030.The team will take into consideration the recommendations of the Farlam Commission, which investigated the killing of 44 striking mineworkers by the police in Marikana in August 2012...
