Plus size: A role model for women who want to live larger

18 August 2016 - 10:40 By Shanthini Naidoo

Forget Gisele Bündchen, plus-size Brazilian model Fluvia Lacerda is the one to watch. Lacerda, who lives in Cape Town in summer, recently joined local plus-size fashion brand Donna as a spokes-man tasked with getting larger women across SA to feel more confident and beautiful. The new Donna line, featuring Lacerda, was released yesterday. How did you get your modelling break in New York?I'd been living in the city for a few years, working as most immigrants do: cleaning, working as a nanny. One day I was on a bus and a magazine editor asked if I'd ever considered becoming a plus-size model. She gave me her card and I've modelled for 15 years now. What would you tell young girls about body image?Your health comes first, especially your mental health. There are far more important things to spend your time on and dedicate your energy to than constantly chasing beauty ideals that have become unrealistic. What questions are you asked that regular-sized models aren't?I get asked about body confidence. What do you want women to know, above everything else?Life is too short to get yourself stuck living by other people's rules. Your body should be a reason for celebration rather than a complaint .Who inspires you?Strong women, who aren't afraid to live their dreams. Women like Frida Kahlo, Gertrude Bell and Karen Blixen. What clothing challenges have you found?Finding brands that understand that plus-size women don't want to dress in "tents".What's it like to model in South Africa?I'm thrilled to be able to work for South African brands. ..
