Police and prisons union goes to college

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union now has a college where its members‚ and citizens‚ can be trained. The college‚ named after Popcru’s current president‚ Zizamele Cebekhulu‚ was handed over to the union this week but will only open in 2018.The college is situated on property belonging to Harmony Gold Mining Company in the Free State."It was not a financial transaction. It's more about putting together a facility that is not in use into good use for the purpose of improving the conditions of the country and ensure that we skill the people who need skills‚” said Popcru communications officer Richard Mamabolo.“We have called on our local and international universities to come up with a curriculum that will ensure that the conditions for policing definitely improve but to also make sure police work becomes more efficient and effective."The college will offer courses such as forensic science‚ police science‚ corrections studies‚ traffic management and public administration in the main. Qualifications range from higher certificates and diplomas to Bachelors degrees.Mamabolo told TMG Digital the property still needs to be refurbished and a curriculum compiled‚ which will cost roughly R1-billion."For the remainder of the year‚ we will ensure that we need to fix whatever that needs to be fixed and then we will start recruiting‚" he added.The college will partner with University of Free State and the University of Zululand‚ as well as the United States’ Sam Houston State University‚ Jackson State University‚ Mississippi College School of Law and the Mississippi Valley State University.The college has already appointed a seven-member board‚ which was inaugurated in March 2015‚ and a vice-chancellor‚ Khulekani Sithole.Other learning centres are planned for Johannesburg‚ Cape Town‚ Durban and East London...
