Trashiest of talk

The US and Great Britain sit first and second on the current Rio Olympics medals table, with 30 and 19 gold medals respectively. They're also neck-and-neck on the Trashies medals table (if you're curious about this log, that's because it's one yours truly only created this week ahead of Caster Semenya's first run on Wednesday). The Trashies are the equivalent of the Razzies, which recognise the worst in film, and it appears no other media are as interested in ascending to the title this year other than those from the two nations - unfortunately, Semenya is the casualty. You see, the two nations have a keen interest in the 800m event because they have athletes who also harbour genuine hopes of snatching gold come Sunday morning (SA time), and Semenya looms uncomfortably large for their liking. The South African took silver in London 2012 after she misjudged her race, but remains the heavy favourite to right the mishap from four years ago.But the Brits have Lynsey Sharp and Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, two 26-year-olds who are also former European champions. The Yanks have 22-year-old Ajee Wilson, who won the event at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, and then silver at the World Indoor Championships. Both meets were held earlier this year.Wilson's teammate, Kate Grace, is at her first Olympics after winning at the US Olympic Track and Field Trials just last month. They have high hopes.Their biggest cheerleaders, aside from the families, should be their national media, which talks less about them, but more about this South African woman who has no business being better than them, who they believe can only be taking testosterone medication to beat them. Semenya has been found to have naturally elevated levels of testosterone. And so the vile reportage - some referring to Semenya as an "ethical minefield" - while others display their lack of understanding by calling her a transgender athlete, which she is not.She was assigned female at birth and the disgusting gender verification tests (British bookies reportedly even took bets on the results of her gender tests) she was subjected to confirmed it - hence the next best theory that she must be taking testosterone to stay ahead, because women can only be associated with weakness.Amid all the hullabaloo surrounding her from the international journalists-cum-faux scientists, it was a tweet from a South African economist that rang truest. Xhanti Payi tweeted last week: "I know Caster Semenya is a woman because people are trying to control her body."Unfortunately, Semenya will have to take that one on the chin, too.It is a battle she will never win as long as men such as Shamil Tarpischev, the former Russian Tennis Federation president exist. He was fired less than two years ago for referring to Venus and Serena Williams as the "Williams brothers".The comment came during a TV interview in which former Russian star Elena Dementieva was the guest. She was asked by Ivan Urgant what it was like playing against the American icons, but before she could reply Urgant made himself the story by adding that he had "tremendous respect for [the Williams siblings] but once one of the sisters passed next to me and I found myself in her shadow for about 40 seconds".Which brings us to another topic entirely, which would necessitate a fresh column another time: The policing of women's bodies, especially black women's bodies. (Maria Mutola of Mozambique was another). Stop that bullshit...
