Former President FW de Klerk has weighed in on the furore surrounding finance minister Pravin Gordhan.

JacarandaFM  reported on Friday that De Klerk‚ speaking on the side-lines of the launch of the Centre for Unity in Diversity in Johannesburg‚ said: “what is happening around the minister of finance is a tragedy.”

He went further to say that the “form of arrogance” displayed by the Hawks was “unacceptable”.

“What is happening around the minister of finance is a tragedy. He is adopting an attitude that he is guilty of nothing‚ that he has given all explanations he has been asked to give and I think he is within his rights in doing so.

“The way in which it is being handled and what I perceive to be a form of arrogance from the Hawks is unacceptable and it is harming the interests‚ not of Pravin Gordhan‚ it’s harming the interests of all South Africans‚” De Klerk said.

De Klerk‚ who won the 1993 The Nobel Peace Prize alongside the late Nelson Mandela‚ said the country was not being “governed well”.

“I think the fight against corruption is not an effective fight. Corruption is taking place hand over hand and is still growing.

“I think cadre employment has hurt our economy and effective service delivery. I'm highly critical of President Zuma's regime and the lack of good governance we are experiencing‚" he said.
