Police are on high alert in downtown Durban as clashes over taxi routes threatened to flare up on Wednesday. At about midday there were reports of violence between the Umgeni and Inanda taxi associations‚ allegedly over routes. There were also claims that one taxi driver took a load of passengers from the rival association. Three people were arrested. However‚ the situation was reportedly brought under control relatively quickly. But shortly after 3pm tensions flared again.A Metro Police source confirmed that at least one vehicle‚ belonging to the Umgeni taxi association‚ had been overturned. Two people were reportedly injured.Further reports from law enforcement indicated that‚ as part of the clashes‚ some taxis were deliberately blocking many roads leading to northern parts of the city.A dispatch sent by police said: "Take note there is major traffic congestion along Umgeni Road towards north (possibly congestion along other northbound routes as well) related to the taxi protest. Taxis are proceeding north but at a slow pace; some taxis are being abandoned along the route‚ some are being used to deliberately block the roadway. Please be vigilant as we are now entering peak traffic for the afternoon. They are blocking off at random. For now routes proceeding out north are affected."Attempts to get comment from SAPS were unsuccessful...
