Evergreen oldies bring the joy to jazz

When it comes to jazz, life begins at 70, and proving this were some of the world's most respected jazz artists who performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival in Johannesburg this weekend.Grammy award-winning jazz musician Bob James might be jazz royalty, yet, at 76, he said he still gets nervous.Also performing this weekend were Ranee Lee, 73, and Houston Person, 81. Despite his accolades, James, one of the founders of smooth jazz, said the decline in album sales meant that artists needed to tour more."All of us [jazz artists] have realised that we have to go out and perform. I love to perform but I don't really like the travelling, it's a little bit brutal . the older you get it's a bigger deal."I can't get rid of the little insecure feeling ... I have this nervousness about whether the live performance will live up to expectations. B ut I like having this nervousness; it makes me want to keep my standards higher," he said...
