Student leaders at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus were given 15 minutes to hold a mass meeting under a heavy police presence on Wednesday afternoon. After a tense morning at the campus‚ following threats of "mass destruction"‚ scores of students gathered to hear deputy SRC president Sunshine Myende address them on the way forward. She said that leaders had resolved to persist with their demand for a no-fee increase next year and that they also wanted to "decolonise the institution and curriculum".She said the the proposed 8% fee increment cap was not acceptable and that students demanded free education‚ which was long overdue."Another thing we want is the decolonisation of the curriculum. We are taught things not relevant to us. For example in psychology we are taught about individualism‚ something that in the African context is not feasible because we are taught ubuntu."Andile Mcineka deputy chair of the Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter and third-year law student told TMG Digital that students would boycott lectures from Thursday until UKZN management acceded to their demand for a no-fee increment. - TMG Digital/The Times..
