Case against ‘#NMMU9’ protesters is postponed
Nine Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students who were arrested on Wednesday appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning. The nine students – six females and three males – were arrested on Wednesday of charges of contravening the National Road Traffic Act and public disturbance. One of the students faces an additional charge of obstructing the police in the execution of their duties.The students – who were held at the Humewood police station – were granted bail of R50 late on Wednesday. They appeared in court in Thursday morning and were told to appear again on October 12.The #NMMU9‚ as they have been named‚ declined to comment until after a meeting with student leaders at the South Campus later on Thursday.The arrests came as students around the country protested Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande’s fee hike announcement earlier this week.– TMG Digital/The Herald..
