Sun in stirrups as Met sponsor

The horses and jockeys taking part in next year's Met will parade along one of Cape Town's main streets in the week before the race. Rob Collins, chief operating officer of new race sponsor Sun International, said Cape Town should brace itself for an explosion of hype in the weeks leading up to the race."We want to be able to give back to Cape Town and make magic with Cape Town," Collins said at yesterday's announcement of the sponsorship deal.The Sun Met, celebrated with Mumm, as the race will be called, will have South African record prize money of R5-million when the horses line up at Kenilworth Racecourse on January 28.And the involvement of Maison Mumm will link the Met to two other iconic races around the world - the Melbourne Cup in Australia and the Kentucky Derby in the US - which are already sponsored by the champagne brand.Sun International is taking over the Met's reins from whisky brand J&B, which has been the sponsor since 1977.Collins said: "We will bring elegance, sophistication, glamour and excitement to the event, and there will be so much more that race-goers can now look forward to."The 133-year-old race is a highlight of Cape Town's summer social calendar for the 22000 people who attend, and pumps about R70-million into the local economy.The Metropolitan Handicap was run annually on Green Point Common in the 1800s and moved to Kenilworth in 1883, where it was known as the Metropolitan Mile.The Met meeting includes 12 races, with an average of 16 horses in each.The most famous horses to have taken part were Pocket Power, which won in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and Politician, in 1978 and 1979...
