Former City of Johannesburg executive mayor Parks Tau has been appointed as the new chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

The ANC Greater Johannesburg Region congratulated its chairperson‚ saying it was a clear vote of confidence in his abilities.

The appointment comes shortly after he was recently appointed onto the advisory board of the World Resources Institute (WRI) as it establishes itself on the African continent.

Tau is also planning to stand for the presidency of the world body‚ the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG)‚ in Bogota‚ Columbia this month.

"These appointments and the UCLG nomination are a clear vote of confidence in Comrade Tau's leadership following his deployment between 2011 and 2016 as an Executive Mayor of Africa's economic hub‚ the city of Johannesburg‚" the ANC said.

"...We have confidence in his abilities to take South African cities and the continent to another level of development and prosperity on the global stage".
