Letter: First degree should be done online

17 October 2016 - 10:13 By Cheryllyn

To bring our undergraduates up to the mark for their first degrees, might it not be a good idea to insist that all students complete their first bachelor degree online? South Africa has some of the best online courses in the world and doing it this way would mean students could register at any online university of their choice.Unisa went through a bad patch but is now brilliant. I have one of my children doing her honours this way at the moment and scoring more than 80% for all her assignments and tests. How many of our current top staff have not studied this way? With all the undergrad facilities freed up, postgrad students could use the university's facilities for research.Universities would save on accommodation and food costs. Each registered undergrad distance education student would be entitled to a quarterly allowance for subsistence purposes, books and equipment, their identity proved with thumb prints .The current restless firebrand students would be four years older, they would be allowed a bigger subsistence allowance to pay for their postgrad degrees, depending on the excellence of their bachelor degrees .South Africa would gain degree students who are up to the mark with technology. Master's and doctoral students would be enabled to do research and there would be more accommodation available .The country does not have the money for new buildings for students who are possibly just going to burn them down again. This idea might go some way to address the current crisis. ..
