Another Bok lock bags top award

Pieter-Steph du Toit last night became the second Springbok lock in two seasons to be named SA Rugby's player of the year. The 24-year-old Du Toit follows Lood de Jager, who walked away with the award in 2015. He bagged the top prize on a night when no fewer than eight of the winners were aged 25 or younger.The average age of all the players who won awards is 22.7 years.The Springbok and Stormers lock fought off strong challenges from his middle row partner, Eben Etzebeth, and the Golden Lions Bok trio of Ruan Combrinck, Jaco Kriel and Warren Whiteley.The Lions, however, did exceptionally well, winning five awards. The winners from Johannesburg are Malcolm Marx (young player), Elton Jantjies (Super rugby), Jacques Nel (try) and Johan Ackermann (coach). The Lions were named team of the year after a superb showing in Super rugby.The players' player of the year award went to Jean-Luc du Preez of the Sharks, who was on Saturday included in the Springbok tour squad for the Barbarians match in London next month.The winners in the other three categories for national teams were Seabelo Senatla (Springbok Sevens), Curwin Bosch (Junior Springbok) and Marithy Pienaar (National Women).Rasta Rasivhenge won the top referee's award for the second year running.The winners in the various competitions were Jantjies, Ox Nche (Free State - Currie Cup Premier Division), Masixole Banda (Border - Currie Cup First Division) and Damian Willemse (Western Province - Craven Week).SA Rugby, for the first time this year, rewarded one of its member unions with a best development award, which went to the Blue Bulls Rugby Union."To see so many young players step up and make their mark certainly bodes well for the future," said Mark Alexander, acting president of SA Rugby...
