Lions coach gets clown treatment in New Zealand

The New Zealand press have now turned on one of their own after publishing a caricature of Warren Gatland dressed as a clown in response to his criticism of the NZ media. Gatland, the Lions head coach, has recently admitted he was "embarrassed" to be a New Zealander after the "arrogant" behaviour of All Blacks supporters - in particular their reaction to Quade Cooper - and sections of the media when Steve Hansen's side set a record of Test victories with their win over Australia. The New Zealand Herald's decision to publish a caricature of Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika dressed as a clown on the morning of the match, with the front-page headline "Send in the Clowns", brought particular condemnation, especially in Australia, where the picture was blasted as childish and disrespectful."I was at Eden Park watching the game a couple of weeks ago and, as a Kiwi, I was embarrassed," said Gatland."There was still a large portion of the crowd booing Quade Cooper. Get over it. Then there was the clown stuff in the Herald."And now the Herald has struck back, stoking the fires ahead of next year's Lions tour to New Zealand by giving Gatland the same treatment as Cheika. If Gatland hoped his Lions team would be afforded more respect by the New Zealand media following his side's Test series victory over Australia in 2013, he might have to think again...
