Among the thousands of people who flocked to Standfontein Pavilion in Mitchells Plain on New Year's Day was a fugitive who allegedly murdered her husband in November.

Despite there being hordes of bathers at the popular swimming spot – and against incredible odds – she was spotted by the victim’s sister who immediately alerted the City of Cape Town's Law Enforcement Marine Unit.

“The sister of the slain victim pointed out the female suspect‚ who was visiting the pavilion‚ to the officers and they arrested her‚” said the city's principal inspector‚ Wayne Dyason.

He said the woman had allegedly stabbed her husband in the head on November 28 and “kept him at home” for two days.

She then took him to hospital‚ claiming that he had been robbed‚ attacked and stabbed on his way to work. He died at hospital shortly afterwards and his wife disappeared.

Officers took the woman‚ from Hanover Park‚ to the police station in Strandfontein.

She was then taken to the Philippi Police Station where the matter is being investigated. Dyason said there were “tens of thousands” of visitors at the Strandfontein Pavilion that day.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed that the 23-year-old woman was arrested.

“Once charged‚ the suspect is due to make a court appearance in Athlone‚” said Traut. – TMG Digital/The Times
