Five held after second night of looting in Jeppestown

Police have arrested five people for public violence and robbery after another night of looting in Jeppestown‚ Johannesburg.

On Monday about 300 people‚ allegedly residents of the Jeppe and George Goch hostels‚ raided foreign-owned stores in the area.

It was the second consecutive night stores in the area had been looted.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the police had received only one complaint of a store being looted‚ although police escorted store owners and their goods out of the area on Monday night.

"Five suspects who broke into shops… were arrested and will be charged with public violence and business robbery‚" he said.

Dlamini said police used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse hostel residents who tried to barricade the M2 highway.

He said police were keeping watch on the area.
