Gospel song plays as Karabo Mokoena’s parents arrive for memorial service

Soft cries and sniffles could be heard from the crowd of mourners in the Diepkloof Multipurpose Centre as Karabo Mokoena’s family walked into her memorial service on Wednesday afternoon.

Her mother held onto her father’s arm as they walked into a packed hall‚ with more than 300 people present at the proceedings.

A gospel song with the lyrics‚ “Be still and know I am here”‚ played as the family walked in.

A somber mood lingered the hall.

Among the dignitaries in attendance was Gauteng MEC for Education‚ Panyaza Lesufi.

Mokoena‚ 22‚ was alleged to have been killed by her boyfriend. Her remains had been set alight in Lyndhurst‚ on April 29. Her family however‚ only learnt of her death last week‚ after searching for her and pleading for assistance in finding her on social media.

A red carpet was laid out in the hall where the memorial service took place.

A large black and white portrait of Mokoena stood on a canvas in the front on the hall. A white candle covered with a pink ribbon was placed the stage which was adorned with fresh white flowers.

Mokoena is expected to be laid to rest on Friday.
