A 45-year-old police constable was arrested at Athlone in Cape Town on Wednesday by the Hawks’ Serious Anti-Corruption unit for allegedly deliberately compromising two cases of theft and armed robbery.

The suspect‚ a detective stationed at Athlone‚ is due to appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for alleged corruption‚ said Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha.

He said the suspect had “allegedly submitted false sworn statements purportedly from complainants asking to withdraw the said cases resulting in both cases being withdrawn in court”.

Acting National Head of the Hawks‚ Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata‚ welcomed the arrest and warned that‚ “there is no place in the police for corrupt elements and that those who continue to serve dishonourably will be removed from the police ranks without fear or favour‚ at all cost".
