A four-year-old boy from Walkerville outside Johannesburg has died after he and a friend were hit by a truck on Friday afternoon‚ said paramedics.

His friend is in a critical condition‚ said ER24 paramedics.

The children were found lying on the side of the road.

The truck apparently rolled and had come to a stop upright on the side of the road. It was not immediately clear what had caused the truck to roll off the road.

The back of the truck was laden with goods in bags.

The one boy was declared dead on the scene and advanced life support was administered to the second.

He was then airlifted to Lenmed Hospital in Lenasia.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
