Thai police arrested 11 people at a resort in the northern province of Chiang Mai being used as a terrorist training camp for government opponents planning political assassinations.

The Bangkok Post reported today police raided the camp in the Mae On district on Saturday evening and detained the 11 suspects described as militant supporters of fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra that staged violent protests in Bangkok and other areas in April-May.

An alleged militant named Kittichai Chansawasdi confessed that he had been part of a group training for a secret mission since September 7 after receiving weapons training near the Cambodian border.

Kittichai was quoted as saying he fled the camp because he was unable to sustain the demanding regimen and had been physically assaulted during training.

Pichit Tamoon, a leader of the Thaksin-linked United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, complained that police had entered the camp without a warrant and had failed to provide details of the charges against the 11 suspects.
