The United Nations Staff Union is mourning the 116 U.N. personnel killed in 2010, including 102 in the Haiti earthquake.
Staff Union President Stephen Kisambira said Tuesday the U.N. suffered its largest staff loss in a single day when the quake struck on Jan. 12, 2010 — 59 civilians and 43 police and military personnel.
In addition, the Staff Union said, at least one U.N. civilian staff member, 10 U.N. peacekeepers and three U.N. civilian subcontractors lost their lives in acts of violence elsewhere last year.
Kisambira said the Darfur region of Sudan, Congo and Afghanistan were again the most dangerous places for U.N. personnel.
He appealed to governments to do “the utmost” to guarantee the protection of U.N. personnel.
