Two people have been killed in shooting incidents at Virginia Tech University, the site of one of the deadliest massacres in US history.

A campus police officer was killed after a routine traffic stop shortly after midday, and a second victim was found dead in a nearby parking lot. The shooter fled on foot.

The incident brought back memories of the April 2007 massacre when a mentally ill student killed 32 people and wounded 25 others before committing suicide . It was the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in US history.
