A Russian airliner was on fire and badly damaged when it overshot the runway after landing at Moscow's Vnukovo airport, state television said, quoting the interior ministry.

The Tupolev Tu-204 jet burst through a perimeter fence and ended up burning on a highway next to the airport, state television said, showing a still picture of the stranded plane.

According to RT.com the plane was a Tupolev-204 coming in from the Czech Republic, and belongs to Russia's Red Wings airline.

RT.com reports that there were 12 people aboard, 4 of whom were crew and 8 were passengers.

Nobody was killed airport spokeswoman Yelena Krylova said in televised comments, but two were in serious condition, according to the state television news channel Vesti.

The channel showed a photo of the wrecked plane's fuselage with the livery of Red Wings airline. The plane's nose, including the cockpit area, appeared sheared off.

An initial report from Interfax said the plane had landed hard on a highway.
