A court has sentenced a married couple to life in prison for killing their 14-year-old daughter and the family's housekeeper in 2008.

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, both dentists from the New Delhi suburb of Noida, had reportedly broken down in tears when the conviction was delivered Monday and vowed to appeal the verdict.

The couple came under suspicion soon after their daughter, Aarushi, was found dead in her bathroom, her throat slit with surgical precision.

Police initially named the Talwars' missing Nepali housekeeper as the prime suspect, until his lifeless body was found a day later on a terrace above Aarushi's room.

Defense lawyer Satyaketu Singh said after Tuesday's sentencing that "there is no evidence against them" and expressed confidence that "this judgment will be overturned."
