A Brisbane City Council officer was very surprised at what was causing a parking meter to malfunction - a carpet python that has made its home there.

The Courier Mail reports that the city has a bit of a problem with people trying to vandalise the meters, and thus they hire officers to go out land fix them.

“People are trying to stick things in meters that shouldn’t go into them,” the city's infrastructure chairman Adrian Schrinner told the paper.

“We get things like foreign coins, bits of wood, chewing gum... people have also thrown acid on them.”

Sometimes it isn't vandalism though, sometimes an officer will open it up and find something like a carpet python has made the meter its abode.

Apparently the snake wasn't the only odd thing found in a parking meter, as officers found a fish living in one in 2011.

The oddest things found in Brisbane's parking meters:

  • A carpet snake
  • Fish
  • Possums
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Liquid nails
  • Vomit
  • Tokens
