A motorcyclist was killed in what Australian police said appeared to be a re-enactment of a scene from the film Mad Max.

The man died when he hit a truck and was flung from his Honda motorcycle in the New South Wales outback town of Silverton on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, believed to be a US national, was flung some distance from the motorcycle and appeared to have been killed instantly, police said.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the truck driver, aged 50, escaped uninjured but a number of witnesses were treated for shock.

"Investigators believe that film fans were in the area attempting to recreate scenes from a movie (Mad Max)," the New South Wales Police Force said.

Segments of the Hollywood action feature starring actor Mel Gibson, who grew up in Sydney, were shot in the area where the accident occurred.
