'I urinate just like a woman' - Romanian hospital chops soldier's penis off

A former soldier is suing a hospital in Romania after he went in to have a kidney operation - and came out sans penis.

Costica Maroleanu went to the County Hospital in the town of Buzau in eastern Romania suffering from kidney failure according the the Daily Mail.

His kidney surgery was successful but a nurse fitted his catheter incorrectly, causing Maroleanu's genitalia to become infected.

After he was transferred to the Bucharest Military Hospital, doctors there examined him and found that all they could do was amputate his penis to save his life.

'The member was black and the only remaining skin was at the base of the shaft and highly infectious. It was recommended to remove the necrotic elements, meaning amputation,' a hospital spokesman said.

Maroleanu was "devastated".

"'It was totally cut off. Now I urinate through an orifice that doctors made between my anus and my testicles.

"I urinate just like a woman. I'm devastated," he said.
