Richard Pananian of Burbank's family sacrificed a lamb in order to keep him safe - a few days before he crashed his car into the back of a pick up truck and got ejected onto the top of a freeway sign.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Pananian had just overcome some serious health issues, so his family performed a matagh on 25 October, a traditional offering in the Armenian Church.

Pananian’s family hoped the lamb would keep him safe according to his cousin.

Five days after making the offering,  Pananian was driving southbound on the 5 Freeway just north of California 134 when he rear-ended a pick-up truck.

Shortly before the crash, California Highway Patrol had received calls about a Ford Fiesta driving recklessly.

Pananian should probably have worn a seatbelt.

Rescue crews had to use a ladder to remove his body from the freeway sign.
