Nigella Lawson, beautiful, clever and rich, is not the sort of woman we expect to be hit by her husband. And yet, here we are, gawking at photographs that apparently show Charles Saatchi with his hands around the heroine's throat - and her obvious, chilling terror.
BENNI McCarthy's end-of-season heroics for Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium could turn out to be a mixed blessing. With two superb goals like that, especially that delicious 90th-minute free kick, is anyone going to be able to stop the glib one from talking now? We say: Talk, Benni, talk. Talk all you want. You deserve it and South African football is all the better for it.
IT WAS like a soap opera-cum-Greek tragedy 72km away in Pietermaritzburg for Gordon Igesund and his players, where tears flowed freely at coming so close yet so far. It was all the more painful for Igesund, for whom it would have been a fifth league title at five clubs. Renowned for his dress sense and ability to talk the hind leg off a donkey, we have nothing but praise and good wishes for Igesund - he is a genuine SA hall-of-famer.
TSAMAYA has always had an appetite for mischief, so we couldn't help noticing "Iron Duke" Irvin Khoza was a little naughty in valuing Vodacom's recent sponsorship of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at R1-billion. We suspect the new deal is not worth that much (we did some industry sleuthing in the week) and that Khoza is playing a form of poker. The PSL's sponsorship deal with Absa is coming up for renewal and we suspect he's - how shall we put this politely? - inflating the numbers to secure a better deal. The bankers paid R500-million for the last deal and apparently negotiations between the PSL and Absa are tense. Watch this space.
OFFICE discussions this week centered on whether Jomo Sono should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute. In drawing with Black Leopards last week, Jomo Cosmos were relegated without even the possible lifeline of the playoffs to look forward to. This is the third time this has happened in recent seasons. Maybe Sono needs to widen his coaching staff. And how about appointing himself technical director or a consultant to the head coach? Maybe he could find it within himself to appoint a director of football. Problem is, we all know who this is likely to be.
IT SEEMS there's a new domestic competition Tsamaya had never heard of. The media accreditation for yesterday's final between SuperSport and Sundowns read: "Nedbak Cup final". You won't find us "bak-ing" at Nedbak!
THIS is the last column for the season. Tsamaya will appear again when the league resumes
