Former president Nelson Mandela is on his way back to his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, following a recent visit to his birthplace in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, presidency spokesman Zizi Kodwa said on Thursday.

Witnesses saw Mandela being transported from Qunu to Mthatha airport earlier on Thursday.

Kodwa said he was in good health and that there was nothing to worry about concerning his wellbeing.

Mandela made the trip to Qunu late last month for the exhumation of his children Makgatho, Thembekile and Makaziwe for their reburial in Mvezo.

Makgatho Mandela was the father of Mandla Mandela. He died in 2005 of an Aids-related illness.

Thembekile Mandela died in a car crash while his father was imprisoned.

Makaziwe died in 1947, at the age of nine months.

Madiba fathered all three children with his first wife, Evelyn Mase.

His visit to Qunu came four months after he was admitted to Milpark Hospital for what officials described as "routine tests".
