Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has defended the Constitutional Court, which is facing a judicial review by the government, according to a report on Monday.

"We remain convinced that there is no basis to reduce the powers of the Constitutional Court to review the decisions of the legislature or executive," Vavi said in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, at the weekend.

According to Business Day, Vavi said the Constitutional Court had handed down valuable judgments that "cemented key socio-economic rights for the working class majority".

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe is expected to announce the terms of reference for the Cabinet's assessment of the judicial system and the role of the judiciary in a developmental state.
