Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille has spoken out about the rape and murder of her sister in 1997, according to a report.

She told the Daily Voice that her sister Laetitia Lindt was stabbed 42 times, hit on the head with an axe 11 times and her body mutilated on June 16 that year.

She was left for dead in a field in Wallacedene and her body was found the next morning by a local farmer.

Charl Robertson and Ricardo Solomons were arrested, convicted and both handed 30-year jail terms for the crimes.

Solomons was recently released from prison after completing half of his sentence.

The murder bears similarities to the rape, mutilation and murder of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen at the start of the month.

De Lille said she was still dealing with the trauma of her sister's murder.

"The violence against women and children is not a new phenomenon. It's been a long battle and one that we must continue to fight," De Lille told the newspaper.

She said the revelation was part of a move to join the crusade against the "war on women".
